In the midst of final year exams, my best friend and I decided that law quite possibly wasn’t for us and that we should do our personal training course instead. The university gym was our only escape from Trusts law and so it seemed an attractive alternative at the time. Once exams were over, I decided that I didn’t hate law quite as much as I had thought and, having already accepted the offer of a training contract, put the idea to the back of my mind. I thought that would be the end of my interest in completing the course but fast forward six months and I am now in the middle of completing my level 2 and 3 qualifications which, combined, amount to a full PT course.
So how did this all happen?
Before I continue I think it’s important for me to point out that I am still going to be a lawyer. When I return from travelling in January I’m going to be completing my LPC (a practical course that must be completed in order to qualify as a lawyer in the UK) and then I’ll be starting as a trainee lawyer in August. I am incredibly happy to be going into my dream career and so as much as I love health and fitness, I’m not doing this course in order to change career. I decided to do my training course for two reasons:
- I feel highly responsible for the information that I share on my social media platform and the advice that I offer on my blog. I regularly get questions that are health and fitness related and sometimes I don’t feel qualified to answer some of them. Unfortunately, I think it’s common to see questionable advice being handed out on social media platforms and I want to ensure that I am sharing accurate and safe advice with you. To do this I feel that it is important that I am fully educated on the topics I am talking about.
- I really enjoy learning and wanted to understand the science behind exercise and nutrition. I follow a certain workout routine and I eat a certain way but when it comes down to it, I don’t completely understand why it works. Health and fitness is such a big part of my life that I think it’s important for me to have an understanding of it that doesn’t just come from flicking through Women’s Health. I must also like a challenge because science has never been one of my strengths!
Once I had decided that I wanted to complete my personal training course, it seemed sensible to get on with it as soon as possible. I will be completing an accelerated LPC in January which is known for being very demanding and so now seemed to be the best, and perhaps only, time to start the course.
Choosing to study with Train Fitness
I spent countless hours searching Google for the best course provider and found this to be a real struggle. I felt that there was very little information online and I read mixed reviews about a lot of the big providers. I contacted both Australian and English providers but found that most were unable to offer the flexibility I needed as I would need to study in Australia but wanted to gain an internationally recognised qualification.
On one of my many scrolling sessions I stumbled across the Train Fitness website. I found numerous glowing reviews and so, satisfied that they offered a high quality course, I got in contact to see if they could offer the flexibility I required. The advisor I spoke to was so helpful and their team have been so accommodating. My main requirement was the ability to study the content in Australia but they also offered the option to take some of my examinations in Australia. Although this isn’t something that I will be doing, it is great to have the choice and could be really useful to some people!
Next in my list of priorities was cost. Some of the courses that I looked at were adding up to over £3000 which seemed extremely high and quite frankly, unaffordable! TRAINFITNESS offered an amazing price of £1099 for their distance course! Throughout my search I didn’t find anything that could beat this price, especially given the quality of the course they offer. As I am studying via distance learning I access all of the course content on the really handy TRAINFITNESS app. I download all the content I need and then I can access it wherever I am, even without internet. The course is delivered in a variety of ways, using podcasts, text, diagrams and images which keeps the material engaging. I’ve been kept motivated by the tests/worksheets at the end of each module which ensure that I have learnt the information before moving onto the next module.
Do I need to come from a scientific background?
One of my main concerns was whether I would be able to complete the course with my extremely limited (non-existent) scientific knowledge. Having now started I would say that an understanding of biology would be useful, but the course explains all the basics very clearly and it is not essential. Sometimes it has taken me a bit longer to grasp certain bits of information but if you work through the content slowly, you will understand it. The app encourages you to be interactive with the content – one task involves sticking sticky tabs to specific areas of your body with the names of the bones located there written on them. Things like this have really helped me to learn and understand the information I am being given.
Do I have to do the level 2 course?
The level 2 course is a gym instructor course and so you might be wondering if you need to complete it. In short, yes, you do! This course gives you all of the basic information about the body and it is only when you combine this course with the level three personal training course that you can become a fully fledged personal trainer.
Is the workload manageable?
I have found the workload to be very manageable. You can work through it at your own pace and can revisit old content if you want to refresh yourself. I am studying alongside a full-time job and so if you can motivate yourself to work, you will be fine. If you think you might need an extra push then maybe consider signing up to the non-distance learning TRAINFITNESS course.
Would I recommend TRAINFITNESS ?
I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to fully recommend them! Since I’ve started the course I have been offered support and received emails to check in on how I’m getting on. I know that if I am struggling then there are a team of people who would be more than happy to help. The content is delivered from a really good platform that you can access on your laptop or phone which makes it really accessible. Not only this but the price really is unbeatable!
I hope that I’ve been able to offer a bit of an insight into why I decided to do my PT course, the course itself and how and why I chose TRAINFITNESS as my course provider. I’m so happy with my decision but I know that it can be a hard one to make so if you have any questions then feel free to comment below or DM me on my Instagram!
